WIU is preparing to host the 36th Annual Rock, Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show.

WIU is preparing to host the 36th Annual Rock, Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show.

Western Illinois University (WIU) will host the 36th Annual Rock, Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show March 12 and 13 at the Union Grand Ballroom.

This year's event is devoted to exploring the facets of the mineral calcite and will feature displays of the mineral as well as presentations on the work of WIU Assistant Professor Thomas Hegna. Other minerals, geodes, fossils and artifacts will be on display, as well.

There will also be several demonstrations, including geode cracking, flint knapping, glass fusing, glass bead making, cabochon finishing and other geologic topics.

The event is organized by Geodeland Earth Science Club Inc., originally a consortium of seven geologic groups from Illinois and Iowa.

The free event will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 12 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 13.

WIU is located at 1 University Circle in Macomb.
