Steinbrecher selects Schulte to direct Moline Public Works
Longtime Moline employee J.D. Schulte recently received a promotion to the directorship of the Department of Public Works from City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher, recognizing his outstanding career performance focused on customer service and teamwork values.
Starting as a mechanic in 1990, Schulte also gained valuable experience in human resources and created an on-site nursing program. While serving in a management capacity in HR, he oversaw workers’ compensation, safety, health insurance and liability issues on a daily basis.
Schulte brings expertise in budgeting, personnel, labor relations, contract issues and public/private partnerships to his new position. He has cultivated strong relationships with both government agencies and local business stakeholders, from the Department of Defense to area automotive dealerships.
The American Public Works Association named him as Fleet Manager of the Year in 2012 and as a Public Works Leadership Fellow in 2015. Schulte and his colleagues ranked 14th best of the nation’s leading fleets and second best for communities of similar size.
Additionally, he mentors young people in the agriculture sector and serves on the Rock Island County Fair board. His appointment enables him to “grow the next generation” of leaders for the city, while modeling progressive approaches such as using alternative fuels.
