Augustana athletes receive CCIC Jack Swartz award

Track

Two Augustana College athletes — pole vaulter Mackenzie Butcher and right-fielder Carter Amundsen — have received the Jack Swartz award.

The award is bestowed on just two athletes — one man and one woman — at the end of each athletic season by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW). Each of the eight schools in the league can pick their own representatives. There are a few requirements, including that the student must receive a varsity letter in his or her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.5.

Butcher, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, won the CCIW pole vault title at the indoor conference track meet. During the 2017 outdoor season, she placed second in the CCIW event. But her hard work just isn’t in her sport. It’s in the books, as well. This last school year, she calculated a 3.93 GPA in biochemistry.

Amundsen, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, led the baseball team in batting, with 68 hits during 182 at-bats. The team went 30-14 overall and 14-10 in the conference. Amundsen scored 45 runs and had 32 RBIs. He was named to the Academic All-American Baseball team, first-team all-conference, first team all-Midwest region team by D3 sports, and American Baseball Coaches Association. Amundsen earned a 3.97 GPA in Accounting and Business.
