Bridge work is planned in the Quad Cities for a major project to be handled by Illinois and Iowa.
Hailing the project as “more than just a bridge,” Gov. Bruce Rauner joined his Iowa counterpart and other officials in a recent ceremonial groundbreaking for construction of an Interstate 74 bridge over the Mississippi River .
The $1.2 billion project on a stretch of jurisdictionally shared interstate is designed to “improve travel along I-74 between 53rd Street in Davenport, Iowa, and Avenue of the Cities in Moline, Illinois,” according to a news release. It will include a new bike and pedestrian path.
The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will take the lead on the project this summer, with the Illinois DOT as a partner. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2021.

“Working together, our states and communities will build a modern, state-of-the-art project that showcases the quality of our workforce and creates economic opportunity for generations to come,” Rauner said, according to the press release. “We are building more than just a bridge, but a vital piece of the country’s transportation network that will promote commerce throughout the Midwest."
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said the project replaces a pair of bridges that have been around for 80-plus years.
“This new bridge will serve as a vital east-west link for the Midwest and help both states improve their regional and global options for moving goods,” Reynolds said in a statement.
