Illinois State House District 72 issued the following announcement on June 26
I’ve had an opportunity to speak with representatives at Illinois Department of Natural Resources regarding safety concerns at the steel dam that tragically claimed two more lives earlier this month.
Although I am relieved to hear that DNR is committed to working with the City of Rock Island to review safety options, I believe it is long past time for a mere review.
We have the knowledge and expertise to have engineered this river to benefit from its power. There is no reason why we can’t re-engineer it to reduce the public safety risk it poses.
As State Representative, I am prepared to do what I can to find a solution that will save lives. Whether that solution is to erect additional permanent safety measures, or remove the dam altogether, we need action now, and I urge the City and DNR to take action immediately to fix this problem.
