Illinois State Representative Daniel Swanson said on Mar. 24 that he opposes a proposed bill that would require serial numbers to be placed on all handgun ammunition in the state. Swanson, a Republican representing Alpha, said he plans to vote against the measure if it comes before the House.

The proposal has raised concerns among some lawmakers and gun owners about its effectiveness and potential impact. The bill aims to help law enforcement track ammunition used in crimes by requiring unique identifiers on each round.

“If it does come to the House floor for a vote, I would certainly be a no,” State Rep. Daniel Swanson, R – Alpha, said. “Most likely, I’m gonna go out on a limb here, but I suspect most guns used in a crime today are not by those with a FOID card. They’re sold, purchased underground or stolen or whatever the case may be, and I suspect that ammunition would go the same way.”

Swanson was elected to represent Illinois’ 71st House District in 2023 after replacing former representative Donald L. Moffitt according to public records.

Debate over tracking firearms and ammunition continues across Illinois as lawmakers consider new ways to address gun violence while balancing concerns about personal freedoms.
