Before obtaining their driver’s licenses, student drivers in Illinois will now be better informed about the risks of distracted driving. The Secretary of State has rolled out an initiative called the “One Road, One Focus” campaign, aiming to educate students on “the consequences of dangerous driving behaviors.”
Statistics indicate that numerous people in Illinois and across the United States have been involved in accidents due to distracted driving. Nationally, more than 300,000 individuals have been injured, and over 3,000 have lost their lives in such accidents.
Under the new policy, after acquiring a learner’s permit, student drivers will need to watch an informational video about the hazards associated with distracted driving before they can obtain a full driver’s license. Additionally, the campaign will feature educational billboards and a dedicated enforcement effort by law enforcement agencies to boost awareness of these dangers.
This initiative comes as part of April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month activities.
