The Illinois state budget has been passed in a late-night session, continuing a trend of last-minute decisions. The new budget, revealed just hours before the vote, totals $55.2 billion, making it the largest spending bill in the state’s history. The extensive document spans over 3,000 pages and will necessitate significant tax increases to cover its costs.

Critics have noted that the budget includes substantial allocations for projects in Democratic legislative districts and maintains funding for health benefits for undocumented immigrants, though at reduced levels compared to previous years. Additionally, the budget includes pay raises for politicians.

Governor Pritzker and Democratic legislators have faced criticism for what some see as unsustainable fiscal practices. One critic stated, “Governor Pritzker and legislative Democrats are continuing the pattern of spending money we don’t have and doing so on the backs of working people.”

A lawmaker expressed opposition by stating, “Because this bill will make your taxes higher while increasing state spending, I voted No.”

As the General Assembly’s spring session concludes tonight, further analysis of its outcomes is expected next week.
