Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison after being convicted on ten corruption counts earlier this year. Madigan, a dominant figure in Illinois politics until 2020, was implicated in a scheme described by prosecutors as the “Make Mike Madigan Money Plan.” The trial revealed that he led a decade-long effort to extract jobs and money from a utility company for his associates.

In response to the conviction, House Republicans have introduced legislation aimed at reforming Illinois’ ethics laws. Proposed changes include strengthening the inspector general’s office, prohibiting lawmakers from using campaign funds for legal defense, and restricting legislators from becoming lobbyists immediately after leaving office. However, these proposals have not advanced in the state legislature due to opposition from statehouse Democrats.

Meanwhile, Governor Pritzker has signed a new state budget for Fiscal Year 2026 into law, marking an all-time spending record of $55.2 billion for Illinois. Despite setting this record, the budget relies on measures such as tax increases and fund reallocations to maintain balance amid declining income tax receipts. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability reported a $56 million decrease in income tax receipts last month compared to the previous year.

Additionally, a senior and veterans fair was held in Galesburg with participation from various vendors and community members. Representative Dan Swanson expressed gratitude towards Seminary Village and other contributors for organizing the event.

The Secretary of State’s office is working with local officials in Aledo to find a new location after closing its DMV site last Wednesday. In the interim, residents can visit DMV locations in Galesburg, Silvis, or Monmouth.

Further news includes activities celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and discussions regarding Illinois’ sanctuary state policies.
