As the days grow longer and the outdoors more inviting, individuals are reminded to prioritize their safety against Lyme disease, particularly during May which marks Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Lyme disease, spread by the black-legged tick or deer tick, is prevalent in most Illinois counties. This bacterial infection has seen an uptick in Illinois and presents symptoms ranging from fever and fatigue to severe joint and nervous system issues in serious cases. With 35,000 to 45,000 new cases reported annually across the United States, experts believe the actual number is ten times higher due to misdiagnoses given its symptom overlap with other illnesses.

To mitigate risks, experts advise treating outdoor clothing with 0.5% Permethrin insecticide and wearing protective apparel such as closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeves. Upon returning indoors, it is crucial to check both people and pets for ticks, using fine-tipped tweezers for removal if necessary.
