Illinois State Representative Dan Swanson announced on April 2 that three bills he sponsored have advanced out of committee and will be considered by the House. The proposed legislation includes measures to support National Guard recruitment, improve property tax notification, and increase compensation for fire protection district trustees.

These legislative developments are important as they address issues related to public safety, government transparency, and support for community volunteers. Swanson said that House Bill 5380 would create the Joint Enlistment Enhancement Program (JEEP), which allows the Department of Military Affairs to offer grants aimed at boosting Illinois National Guard recruitment through peer referrals. The department would set criteria for eligibility and administration of these grants.

House Bill 1150 proposes that chief county assessment officers notify taxing districts if required affidavits concerning tax-exempt properties have not been filed. Meanwhile, House Bill 5253 seeks to raise annual stipends for fire protection district trustees who serve on local boards. Swanson said all three bills were approved unanimously in committee.

Swanson also addressed House Bill 4414, which would have required serial numbers on every piece of handgun ammunition in Illinois. He said, “I am pleased and relieved to be able to tell you that this bill did not advance.” He added his opposition was based on concerns about increased costs and burdens for law-abiding citizens seeking to exercise their rights.

In addition to legislative updates, Swanson described a recent visit from the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce in Springfield where discussions focused on passenger rail service restoration, workforce improvements, and development incentives. He also highlighted the upcoming Summer Reading Club with a special theme celebrating America’s 250th birthday; students who read eight books by July 31 will be invited to an ice cream party with extra prizes available for reading about American history.

Swanson was elected as a Republican representative in Illinois’ 71st District in 2023 after succeeding Donald L. Moffitt according to Ballotpedia.

The update concluded with well wishes for Easter celebrations and brief mentions of other news items including awareness efforts around Amniotic Fluid Embolism and statewide policy updates.
