Illinois State Representative Dan Swanson released a Capitol News Update on March 13, covering recent legislative developments, state revenue figures, and local community events.
Swanson’s update is significant as it informs constituents about policy decisions that could affect education funding, state finances, and local initiatives. The report also highlights the involvement of local officials in statewide discussions and events.
A key topic in the update is the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program. Swanson said the program allows donors to help students access academic resources at public or private schools without diverting government funds from public schools or increasing state costs. However, Illinois has not yet opted into the program. According to a poll conducted by M3 Strategies in February, 55% of Illinois residents support joining the program while 22% are opposed. The state has until January 1, 2027, to make a decision.
Swanson also reported that Illinois’ state revenue increased by $321 million in February compared to last year. While individual income tax payments rose by $150 million and federal source payments increased by $30 million, corporate income tax receipts declined by $23 million. He noted that most general funds come from paycheck deductions tied to job creation. Despite this growth, Illinois’ unemployment rate remains high at 4.6%, ranking it 38th nationally at the end of last year.
The update included details about Women in Manufacturing Day at Black Hawk College where Swanson participated as a panelist alongside other legislators and educators. The event aimed to introduce young women in grades six through eight to manufacturing careers through hands-on scenarios led by experienced women in the field.
Swanson recounted his visit with Henry County township officials to discuss pending legislation affecting townships and described participating in a fundraising event for Special Olympics during warmer weather than previous years’ polar plunge. He also attended Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Justin Wilkerson’s retirement ceremony after his 32 years of service with the Illinois Army National Guard.
Swanson was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 71st House District in 2023, succeeding Donald L. Moffitt according to available records.
The newsletter concluded with brief mentions of calls from mayors regarding local government funding, sports achievements such as Leathernecks winning an OVC tournament title, travel recommendations within Illinois, spring flooding risks for Quad Cities residents, and recognition of a Sherrard educator as IEA Support Professional of the Year.
