The Moline Special Olympics basketball team took the gold at the district tournament in Bloomington on Jan. 17.

The win allowed the team to move up to the state basketball competition on March 11-12 at Illinois State University in Bloomington, where it took the silver medal in its division. In addition to the team's second place win, Logan Frazelle received the bronze in the individual skills competition.

Moline's Special Olympics team consists of three freshmen, three juniors and three seniors -- with two members returning from last year's team. Last year, the team also won at the district tournament and competed at the state level.

“Our Special Olympics basketball team is so excited to make it to the State Competition two years in a row,” Special Olympics Basketball Coach Jerilyn Hocker said. “The excitement, determination and teamwork they show on and off the court makes me so proud to be part of their continued success.”

The Moline team is the only Special Olympics basketball team in the Illinois Quad Cities; the team must travel outside of the county to compete. Special Olympics athletes from Moline High also compete in bowling, track and field and skiing. Several have reached state level in their sports.
