ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 72: Halpin: State Tax Filing Deadline Extended to July 15

72

Illinois State House District 72 issued the following announcement on March 27

Illinois’ tax filing deadline has been extended from April 15 to July 15, a move that state Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, says will help working families and small business owners weather the economic impact of COVID-19.

“Thousands of families in Illinois have seen their finances take a hit during this unprecedented public health crisis,” said Halpin. “Social distancing is necessary to flatten the curve and protect our most vulnerable residents, but the closures of businesses have left many out of work and without a paycheck. Extending the tax filing deadline is one positive step to allow families to keep more of their money during this challenging time.”

Illinois’ tax filing deadline has been pushed back 90 days, from April 15 to July 15, to match the federal deadline that was also pushed back. The extension provides more flexibility for individuals and small business owners who may be losing income due to COVID-19. Refunds will continue to be issued for taxpayers who file prior to the new due date, and Halpin is encouraging those who will get money back to file early.

“If you are able to file your taxes now and know you will receive a refund, there’s no need to wait until summer,” said Halpin. “The IRS is continuing to process refunds, so you shouldn’t see a delay.”
