Students from Western Illinois University (WIU) recently raised more than $70,000 to support St. Louis Children's Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center by dancing.
"The WIU Dance Marathon Executive Board worked long hours for a year to plan this year's main event," Dance Marathon Advisor for Internal Relations Ashley Katz said. "Words cannot express how proud I, along with the other advisors, are of this dedicated, passionate group of students. We went into the event this year well below our $70,000 goal. Instead of quitting, the board and all of the participants put their efforts into high gear and worked tirelessly throughout the event in order for those cards to be flipped to show $70,885.03 at the end of the night."
WIU has been hosting dance marathon fundraisers for the past three years. After bringing in approximately $22,000 its first year, the event has grown by that amount or more each of the following years. At each event, dancers sign up to dance for 12 hours, in honor of the 12-hour shifts of medical professionals and those who can't stand.
Dance organizers have already scheduled the dance marathon's fourth edition for April 1, 2017.
Located in Macomb, Illinois, Western Illinois University was founded in 1899.
