Rock Island's Martin Luther King Jr. Center is preparing to host its first-ever African-American Girls Conference.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Rock Island will host the first-ever African-American Girls Conference from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 9.
The gathering, titled "Loving the Skin You're In," is directed at girls in sixth through 12th grades. Participation is free and includes breakfast and lunch -- but registration is required. Prospective participants can register in person at 630 Seventh Ave. in Rock Island or over the phone at 309-230-9465.
The event was announced by Rock Island Mayor Dennis Pauley during his Update Rock Island address at the March 7 Rock Island City Council meeting.
Pauley also highlighted a public presentation of the city's latest historic preservation plan, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. on March 23 at the Rock Island Public Library.
