Stephanie Acri's name didn't appear on the non-partisan primary ballet for mayor of Moline -- at least not until nearly 3,000 voters wrote it in.
“That moment when the importance not only of *what* you are doing but *who* you are doing it for looks you dead in the eye,” Acri wrote in a Facebook post after her stunning victory on Tuesday. “I'm overwhelmed by the 2,984 write-in votes, and I want to express my gratitude to the voters for not only supporting me but the democratic process. You've shown up for Moline in a BIG way. On to the general election!”
Incumbent Mayor Scott Raes, the only candidate on the ballot, received 799 votes to guarantee his spot in the April 4 election. Four other write-in-candidates received 35 total votes.
With thousands of write-in ballots to count, the Rock Island County Clerk’s Office did not announce the winner until Wednesday. It confirmed that Acri had garnered approximately three and a half times more votes than Raes.
According to Acri’s website, her priorities include investing in roads, water and sewer systems and other various infrastructure projects. A mother with a background in engineering, Acri touts her years of involvement in Moline’s community as a major strength.
