Augustana golfer Melanie Loeffler is off to an impressive start in her sophomore season, being named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Player of the Week recently.
Loeffler shot a two-day total of 156 at the Highland Classic on Sept. 2-3 at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island. She shot an 80 on the first day, then beat her score by four strokes the next day.
Loeffler tied with Viterbo’s Mattie Mahlum, who had a line score of 79-77, for a 156, for second place. Danielle Ducklow, also of Viterbo, won the tournament with a two-day score of 151, shooting 82 on the first day and a 69 on the second.
Loeffler is averaging 70 strokes per round and was named medalist in a dual meet against Monmouth in August, shooting an 81.
The second-place Vikings set a four-person 36-hole school record at the Highland Classic with a two-day team total of 659, one stroke better than last year’s record of 660. Augustana also set a record on the second day for a single-day, 18-hole total of 322 strokes, one stroke better than 2008’s 323.
