Orion Community Unit School District 223 Board met Oct. 18.

The meeting was called to order at the District Office, 1002 11th Avenue, Orion, Illinois, at 7:30 p.m. by Board President Nedved. Present were members Abbott, Cooper, Kane, Kayser, Nedved, and Nightingale. Absent was member Monson.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Board President Nedved announced that the Board had met in executive session at 6:45 p.m. - 7:04 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the District or legal counsel for the District, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee or against legal counsel for the District to determine its validity; and discussion of lawfully closed meeting minutes, whether for purposes of approval by the body of the minutes or semi-annual review of the minutes as mandated by Section 2.06.
Motion by Nightingale, second by Kayser to approve the consent agenda. The consent agenda included approval of minutes of September 20, 2017, 6:45 p.m., regular meeting; September 20, 2017, 6:45 p.m., executive meeting; September 20, 2017, 7:50 p.m., regular meeting; approval of prepaid bills: $33,435.15; approval of September, 2017 Payroll Benefits: $46,520.78; and approval of October, 2017 bills: $257,411.19, totaling $337,367.12; approval of September 29, 2017, payroll: $269,172.94; approval of October 13, 2017, payroll: $287,355.56; approval of activity fund financial statements from C.R. Hanna Elementary School, Orion Middle School, and Orion High School; approval of district financial reports; accepted resignation from Autumn Loete as a Middle School Cook effective immediately; and accepted resignation from Jeff Wiedenmann as Middle School Cross Country Coach effective immediately. Ayes: Abbott, Cooper, Kane, Kayser, Nedved, and Nightingale. MOTION CARRIED.
C.R. Hanna Principal Lowe recognized the 5th Grade students and & staff for hosting another great American Wax Museum this year. OMS Principal Briney recognized Mr. Haley and the OMS choir students for performing a wonderful concert last Sunday. Mr. Briney also announced that several OMS students have been selected for the IMEA All-District Choir. Board President Nedved thanked the Music Boosters for hosting the reception following the choral concert. Mr. Nedved also recognized Board Vice-President Nightingale for recently receiving an IASB Professional Development Award.
Christy McCollom, Music Boosters’ representative, spoke concerning IMEA, an upcoming concert on November 11, a recent marching band competition in Muscatine, an upcoming fundraiser, and upcoming Fall Play at OHS on November 4 and 5. Jen Hays, OEA President, spoke concerning an upcoming “town hall” style meeting on November 14, and recent or upcoming events at each school building.
Superintendent Blessman announced that the Bureau-Henry-Stark Regional Office of Education will be performing the annual Health/Life Safety inspection of district school buildings on Thursday, October 19. Mr. Blessman commended OMS for their RtI Program this school year, commended C.R. Hanna for their work with the new math curriculum, and commended OHS for their work with the recent PSAT. Superintendent Blessman reviewed the Annual Financial Report and discussed the upcoming IASB-IASA-IASBO Joint Annual Conference in November. Superintendent Blessman also discussed technology, Rock Island County facility sales tax revenue, several facility projects, and lead testing.
Middle School Principal Briney reported on the end of the first grading OMS period, a recent OMS dance, report cards, parent-teacher conferences, and Student Council’s involvement in the Student Hunger Drive. Mr. Briney also announced that $176 was generated in a recent Penny War at OMS, which will be donated to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief. Mr. Briney also reported on Lego teams and athletics.
High School Principal DeBaillie reported that three Orion students were OHS recently recognized as the Area Career Center’s Student of the Month in their classes. Mr. DeBaillie also reported on upcoming parent- teacher conferences, Student Council, Robotics, National Honor Society, athletics, and an upcoming CAC meeting.
C.R. Hanna Principal Lowe reported on a Book Fair, safety drills, positive behavior dance party, and a library selection and weeding policy.
Motion by Kane, second by Abbott to hire Jennifer Crouch as an ESP Extended School Program (ESP) Childcare Provider for the remaining 2017-2018 school year. Ayes: Abbott, Cooper, Kane, Kayser, Nedved and Nightingale. MOTION CARRIED.
Motion by Kayser, second by Cooper to hire/transfer Michele E. Weston as a four (4) hour Cook at Orion Middle School for the remaining 2017- 2018 school year. Ayes: Abbott, Cooper, Kane, Kayser, Nedved and Nightingale. MOTION CARRIED.
Motion by Nightingale, second by Cooper to hire Jeff Anderson as the Middle School Assistant Wrestling Coach for the remaining 2017-2018 school year. Ayes: Abbott, Cooper, Kane, Kayser, Nedved and Nightingale. MOTION CARRIED.

The Board continued to work on updating three of the District Goals: Goal Area 3 – District/Community Relations, Goal Area 4 – Facilities, and Goal Area 5 – Finance. The Board discussed the upcoming IASB-IASA-IASBO Joint Annual Conference and Vice-President Nightingale reviewed the 2017 Resolutions Committee Report.
