Former Mercer County Board Member Fred Rooth, a man colleagues described as personifying public service, died July 3 at age 84.
Rooth was a fixture in Illinois Republican politics, according to his obituary on the Fippinger Funeral Home website. A graduate of Joy High School, Rooth served on the Vietnam War Draft Board and was a life-long farmer.
His political posts included a quarter-century spent as a trustee on the Henderson, Mercer and Warren Regional School Board, as well as serving as chairman of the Mercer County Republican Central Committee. He left the school board in 2011 to represent District 4 on the Mercer County Board.
“He was an amazing man and he cared so much for everyone,” the Mercer County Illinois Republicans wrote on a Facebook post. “He personified public service.”
Rooth was married to Harriet “Arlene” Willits from 1957 until her death in 2008. He is survived by his daughter Sara Rooth (Jeff) of Chapel Hill, NC., as well as nieces, nephews and cousins, the obituary stated.
The service will be held Friday, July 13, at 10 a.m. at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo, with burial at the Eliza Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday.
