Dawson Schulenberg leads Orion in 62-0 win over Sherrad

Football

Dawson Schulenberg passed for five touchdowns as Orion, ranked No.4 by the Associated Press (AP) in Class 2A, routed Sherrard 62-0 to improve to 2-0.

Chargers coach Chip Filler said Schulenberg had his eyes on the school touchdown passing record before he decided to sit him with the game well in the balance.

“Our school record is six (touchdowns), and Dawson really wanted me to put him back in,” Filler told Dispatch-Argus. “He was hungry for that record.”

Seth West also starred for Orion, rushing for 101 yards on an average of nearly 13 yards per carry. In delivering the shutout, the Chargers defense recorded three interceptions, with senior Christian Williams running one of them back 30 yards for a score.

Things are expected to get a bit more challenging for Orion when they come against defending Three Rivers Rock champ Sterling Newman, rated No. 2 in the AP poll.

“Next week is a big test, and whatever happens, happens,” Filler said. “I believe that this team can win any game, and next week is no different. We’re going to be playing to win, and so are they.”

As for the rankings, the Chargers try not to place too much emphasis on things that are out of their hands.

“We look one week at a time,” Filler said. “Whatever the media thinks we’re ranked, we use that as fuel. We only pay attention for the psyche of it, and don’t let it affect us on the field.”
