Illinois Education Association Moline Region recently issued the following announcement.

Geneva Education Association (GEA) and community members will picket Monday, Nov. 12 ahead of District 304’s Board of Education (BOE) meeting. Members and parents plan to address the board during public comment, and are asking the board to hear their concerns in full. GEA members authorized a strike last month, and the earliest date educators could walk is Tuesday, Nov. 13.

“What happens at the bargaining table doesn’t just affect our educators,” said GEA President Kevin Gannon. “The whole community is impacted. Their voices should be heard and the meeting will provide a great opportunity for the board to hear from our community.”

The BOE has limited public comment in previous meetings. GEA is prepared to let all educators, parents and community members’ voices heard. Should the BOE limit public comments on Monday, the GEA will hold their own public comment section outside of the board meeting to allow all community members a chance to speak.

“Our members have been out canvassing before and after school and on weekends to meet with their neighbors and Geneva parents and hear their concerns,” said Gannon. “We have over a thousand signatures and comments of support from the community. The meeting on Monday will allow our board to hear these concerns for themselves.”

The GEA represents 459 teachers in District 304’s nine schools and serves the district’s 5,800 students. GEA members have been out canvassing the community and have collected over one thousand signatures from Geneva residents in support of a step and lane salary schedule. GEA members will present the full petition to the board on Monday.

GEA members will picket starting at 6:30 p.m. in front of Geneva Middle School South (1415 Viking Dr, Geneva). The board meeting will be held at the middle school to accommodate all those who wish to attend.

GEA’s next mediation session with the district is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m
