Old Business:
Committee Reports and Updates:
The commission will continue to identify projects for KMB. Rodd will email the Goals/Objectives updated worksheets, the KMB mission statement and our KMB materials which were submitted to Keep America Beautiful to the KMB commission members so that we will have information at-the-ready when grants become available.
City Update: Rodd informed the Commission of the change in date for the Moline Recycle Superhero award announcement. The award will be presented at the Committee of the Whole Council meeting on January 21st. Rodd talked with Kathy Morris about a template graphic that we could use to design reusable bags and possibly stickers which would have visual descriptions of recyclables (including examples of aseptic products) and non-recyclables to promote recycling education outreach through the 50th anniversary of Earth Day events (week of Wed., April 22, 2020). She suggested that we could tailor the side panels of the bags with Moline-specific details. Rodd will reach out to HyVee and Midland Davis to set-up a meeting about partnering on this project. Rodd will also ask Kathy if they know price point info for the bags. Kristen suggested that KMB organize a tour of the Scott County Waste Commission facility for Moline residents to see and understand the recycling process firsthand.
Downtown Events: Geoff summarized a successful 2019 year of events for Downtown Moline/Moline Centre, culminating with the thousands of attendees at the Lighting of the Commons and Holiday Hop. Moline received kudos from citizens for the beautiful ~127 planters that were distributed further out from the Downtown center to incorporate Mercado on 5th and the new hotel areas. The Commission discussed ideas to harvest the tulip bulbs, after the spring planter tulips go buy, and sell the bulbs to the public to fund the purchase of canna bulbs for the later summer planter designs. Selling the bulbs to the public would be good PR to make people aware of the work the City and Moline Center do with the planters. In addition, the City and Moline Centre could partner with an organization like Friend of Riverside Park to organize the sale and share the profits with.
New Business:
Rodd informed the Commission that Mayor Acri is reviewing information from City Commissions before assigning new City Council liaisons.
A new addition to the Touch-a-Truck event will be to encourage attendees to bring food items to fill a truck for the Food Bank. The Commission will think if there is a way for KMB to incorporate this into our booth activity.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 5:10 pm. Motion seconded and passed.
Next meeting will be at 4:30pm, Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Moline Municipal Services Building.
