Old Business:
Committee Reports and Updates:
The commission will continue to identify projects for KMB. Rodd will email the Goals/Objectives updated worksheets, the KMB mission statement and our KMB materials which were submitted to Keep America Beautiful to the KMB commission members so that we will have information at-the-ready when grants become available.
City Update: Rodd welcomed three visiting nursing students to the meeting who were completing a class assignment on how a city commission can affect the health of a community. The Commission explained the mission of Keep Moline Beautiful and some of its signature projects to the visitors. Rodd reported that after substantial sidewalk repairs and renovations were completed by the City, the trees that were donated by Living Lands and Waters have been planted in the Uptown neighborhood and business district.
Blue Can Group: The Moline Recycle Superhero award will be announced and presented at the Council of the Whole (COW) meeting in December. Kristen will write the blurb that will be read at the COW meeting about this year’s Recycle Superhero recipient.
Garden Guardians: Mary helped facilitate the harvest and transfer of 200 canna bulbs to give to the Uptown Neighborhood.
New Business:
Kristen reminded the Commission that it will be the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Wed., April 22, 2020. She suggested that the Commission start thinking of ways KMB can participate in the week-long series of events occurring all over the Quad Cities. The commission discussed having the Recycle Superhero cutouts at the Farmer’s Market on the 18th or 26th and KMB will organize a cleanup during that week.
Lori Turner, via email, suggested that KMB investigate applying for a Keep America Beautiful grant to replace the some of the ash trees that have had to be cut down in the city and trees lost by the flood. “The Keep America Beautiful/UPS grant program, open exclusively to Keep America Beautiful community-based affiliates, provides grants for tree plantings that will have a greater likelihood of withstanding natural disasters in communities that have lost a significant number of trees because of a recent disaster. In addition, Keep America Beautiful helps connect UPS employees with local Keep America Beautiful affiliates to provide volunteer support to plant the trees and to fulfill other community improvement projects.”
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 5:30 pm. Motion seconded and passed
