The Tax Foundation, an independent tax policy nonprofit, recently found that Illinois has the highest gas tax rates of any state in the region, and higher taxes on fuel than all but two other states.
Illinois consumers pay approximately $0.52 in add-on taxes per gallon, a nationwide analysis by The Tax Foundation shows. This creates problems for gas station owners near the state's borders, a release issued on Illinois Policy said.
In comparison, the only neighboring state to approach Illinois’ cumulative taxes on a gallon of gas is Indiana, at approximately $0.48 per gallon, according to Tax Foundation analysis. From there, the difference only increases in neighboring states, beginning with Michigan at approximately $0.42, Ohio at approximately $0.39, Wisconsin at approximately $0.33 per gallon, Iowa with approximately $0.31, Kentucky with $0.26, and finally Missouri with approximately $0.17 of additional taxes per gallon.
The analysis by the Tax Foundation did not include the federal gas tax, but it did take into account taxes and fees such as excise tax, environmental fees, storage tank fees and taxes, general sales tax and any other government taxes and fees that contributed to the cost of a gallon of gas specific to the individual states.
