Veteran state Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) is taking a stand for accountability.

McCombie is co-sponsoring legislation alongside Rep. Anthony DeLuca (R-Chicago Heights), which seeks to amend the state’s mandate act.

More specifically, the proposal provides “that any state mandate regarding any subject matter enacted on or after the effective date of this amendatory act that necessitates additional expenditures from local government revenues shall be void and unenforceable unless the General Assembly makes necessary appropriations to implement that mandate.”

The measure further states “that the failure of the General Assembly to make necessary appropriations shall relieve the local government of the obligation to implement any state mandate.”

With the state’s unfunded pension debt reported to be in the neighborhood of $317 billion, McCombie made it clear in a post to Facebook she thinks it's long pass time that Springfield stopped taking on debt it can’t afford to pay.

"In short ... no more unfunded mandates," she said.
