Illinois State Sen. Neil Anderson recently criticized the Senate majority for failing to take up legislation to ease the tax burden on hard-working Illinoisans.

Senate Bill 2162 was filed by Anderson (R-Moline) to provide tax relief to some Illinoisans by allowing them to deduct state income taxes on earned overtime wages.

"NO TAXES ON OVERTIME: Hard working people need a break and we should be able to give them one," Anderson said in an April 30 Facebook post. "We’re not taking away any tax money from the government, we just simply would not be adding additional taxes to their hard-earned money."

Under the bill, the state would still withhold state income taxes from earned overtime wages, but tax filers will be able to receive a deduction on their return for the amount of taxes paid on overtime wages.

The Senate Majority failed to take up the legislation because of a committee deadline. Anderson has filed a request asking that the committee extend the deadline to hear his bill.

Anderson has stated that he will continue to advocate for the hard-working men and women of his district.

“Illinois residents should not be taxed more for working more,” Anderson said in a statement. “This bill provides actual relief for those who work long hours.”
