A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Kewanee Finance Department on October 25, 2024. The request, made by Rock Island Today, a media organization dedicated to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought detailed records of sales tax collected from retailers.
The specific information requested includes data from January 1, 2024 till the present date. This encompasses the amount of sales tax collected from retailers each month compared to projected figures and the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month. Furthermore, the names of each retailer and their gross retail sales reported for each month were also requested.
As a media organization, Rock Island Today plays a vital role in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is crucial for us at Rock Island Today to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In light of our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. We await a response from the City of Kewanee Finance Department regarding this FOIA request.
