The Rock Island-Milan School District No. 41 Board of Education recently voted on opening the 2016-17 budget writing process.

The board was required to craft a budget with a deficit of less than $810,000.

Alicia Sanders led a discussion with the board on implementing Senate Bill 100. The law, signed into place by Gov. Bruce Rauner in August requires school administrators to severely limit the application of suspensions, expulsions and referrals to alternative schools by trying a number of other measures to address student issues first. Schools have until Sept. 15 to update their disciplinary policies to reflect the changes.

The board also had the opportunity to vote on $225,797 in iPads, Chrome Books, Chrome Bases and Promethean Boards purchased through the district's Title I funding.

Additionally, the board voted on the retirement of Debbie Depaepe; the resignations of Marcy Volkstorf, Tracy Dailey-Juscius and Cara Harksen; and the appointments of Bryan Stortz and Michael Jackson.
