Rep. Mike Smiddy recently voted in favor of a taking a month-long break.
Amidst criticism for failing to join his fellow lawmakers in appealing for an extended work session to address Illinois’ ailing budget, Rep. Mike Smiddy (D-Hillside) opted to return home for a month-long break during March.
Several lawmakers expressed their concerns that the House would not remain in session to work on the critical budget, but the legislative body had been previously slated to convene for only a few days this month prior to the primary election on March 15 -- based on a calendar constructed by Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago).
“It is discouraging that Mike Smiddy would not join other representatives in demanding the House stay in session during this difficult time,” Tony McCombie, a candidate for state representative, said. “Legislatures not working together and blaming each other is not solving the problems in District 71 or the State of Illinois. The fact that they are not in session is shameful.”
Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) was among those in favor of remaining. He stated that leaving Springfield in the thick of an important legislative session was unwise, but the Illinois House Democratic Leadership declared his motion to stay in session out of order.
“Politics have taken center stage, and the lack of representation and urgency is a problem,” McCombie said. “I am thankful for our neighbors, Rep. Stewart and Rep. Demmer, for supporting the House staying in session, but where was our representative? Mike Smiddy continues to prove his allegiance to Speaker Madigan. I think it’s time that he explains why he is not willing to work for Illinois and the people of the 71st District.”
