The Rock Island Board of Zoning Appeals met April 13 to approve a request from Robert Gamrath, an attorney for Wal-Mart, for a proposed 189,541-square-foot Wal-Mart retail store and separate convenience store with gas pumps.
This request would be located on the development site in a B-4 (highway/intensive business) district at the site of the former Watch Tower Plaza, at approximately 3750 11th St.
The motion was carried unanimously.
The board also approved a request to substitute one non-conforming use (ceramic and gift shop) for another non-conforming use (grocery store); a request to expand a non-conforming use by constructing a parking area; a request for special exception to authorize a church in an R-3 zoning district; and a request to substitute one non-conforming use (foster care office) for another non-conforming use (grocery store).
