Rock Island County Board welcomes new members, selects new chairman

Rock Island County Board met Monday, Dec. 5.

Here are the minutes as provided by Rock Island:

Karen Kinney, County Clerk, gave the oath of office to the county board members newly elected in the general election held on November 8, 2016.

Robert Reagan, District 7

County clerk Kinney stated, "Congratulations to all newly elected county board members. You worked hard for this."

The count clerk, Karen Kinney, called the organizational meeting of the county board to order at 5:37 pm, 3rd floor of the board members' room, Rock Island, IL.

Ms. Kinney stated, "We have a quorum."

County clerk Kinney requested a moment of silence for the invocation.

Pledge of allegiance led by Rod Simmer, District 18.

County clerk Kinney stated, "The first order of business is to elect a temporary county board chairperson. I will make thre calls for nominations for a temporary board chairperson.

A make a first call.

County board member Camlin moved to nominate Mia Mayberry as temporary county board chairwoman. Board member Langdon seconded. Board member Mayberry accepted the nomination.

I make a second call.

I make a third and final call.

Let the record show that Mr. Camlin nominated Ms. Mia Mayberry as temporary chairperson and Ms. Mayberry has accepted the nomination."

Madam Clerk Kinney stated, "I' need a motion to close the nominations and approve the nomination by acclamation." Board member Vyncke moved and Ms. O'Brien seconded.

A voice vote was taken.

Motion carried.

County Clerk Kinney stated, "Mia Mayberry is temporary county board chairperson."

Temporary county board chairperson Mayberry stated, "Good evening. I am going to open up the floor for nominations for county board chairperson.

I will make three calls for nominations for county board chairperson.

I make the first call for any nominations.

Board member Johnston nominated Kenneth "The Moose" Maranda.

Board member Vyncke seconded. Board member Maranda accepted the nomination.

I make a second call for any nominations.

I make a third and final call for nominations for county board chairperson.

Board member Steffen nominated Drue Mielke. Board member Simmer seconded. Board member Mielke accepted the nomination.

I declare nominations for county board chairperson are now closed."

Clerk Kinney stated, "I will call the vote and you will state the name of the person you wish for county board chairman, either Mr. Maranda or Mr. Mielke."

An oral roll call vote was taken.

Temporary Chairperson Mayberry declared board member Ken "Moose" Maranda as the new county board chairman.

Ms. Kinney stated, "Will our new county board chairman please come forward. Congratulations, Moose."

(Applause)

Chairman Maranda said, "Thank you, Ms. Kinney.and thank you everyone. I appreciate being selected again to serve another two years."

Chairman Maranda stated, "At this time, I will open nominations for vice chairman.

I will make three calls for nominations for vice chairman.

I make the first call for nominations for vice chairman.

Board member Vyncke nominated Nick Camlin. Board member Mayberry seconded. Board member Camlin accepted the nomination.

I make a second call for nominations for vice chairman.

Board member Mielke nominated J. Robert Westpfahl. Board member Steffen seconded. Board member Westpfahl accepted the nomination.

I make a third and final call for nominations for vice chairman.

Are there any other nominations? I declare nominations for vice chairman closed."

Clerk Kinney stated, "I will call the vote and you will state the name of the person you wish for county board vice chairman, either Mr. Camlin or Mr. Westpfahl."

An oral roll call vote was taken.

County board chairman Maranda declared the county board organizational meeting recessed.

The next meeting of the Rock Island County Board will be Tuesday, December 20, 2016.
