Moline-Coal Valley SD board presents professional development overview

The Moline-Coal Valley School District No. 40 Board of Education met Nov. 14 to present a professional development overview.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the board:

CALL TO ORDER The Committee of the Whole Meeting was called to order by Board Vice President Kate Schaefer at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 14, 2016 at the Logan Elementary School, 160225" Street, Moline, Illinois 61265.

PUBLIC COMMENT AND PARTICIPATION None.

APPROVAL OF COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE MINUTES The minutes of the Committee of the Whole Meeting of October 10, 2016 were presented for approval as amended. A motion was made by Susan Tucker, seconded by Tim Miller, unanimously carried, that the minutes be approved as presented and placed on file.

SPOTLIGHT - LOGAN ELEMENTARY Mrs. Heinrich, Principal of Logan Elementary, introduced the 16th Avenue Singers, an after school choir group. Mrs. Heinrich also introduced Mary Tallitsch, playing the piano, and Mrs. Adams, directing the students. The 16" Avenue Singers presented two songs to the Board.

5. TOTAL SCHOOL CLUSTER GROUPNG UPDATE

Matt DeBaene, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, presented an update of Total School Cluster Grouping (TSCG) pilot.

Matt DeBaene reported schools this year and last year that have been implementing cluster grouping. Mr. DeBaene introduced Michele Pittington, Principal of Franklin Elementary, Vickie Diamond-Bohlman, Principal of Willard Elementary, and Karla Heinrich, Principal of Logan Elementary.

Ms. Diamond-Bohlman presented an overview of the professional development and how it has been planned and presented to the staff. Ms. Pittington spoke about the process of identifying the students. Ms. Heinrich provided her opinion on the success of the pilot and how student needs are being met. Mr. DeBaene also introduced teacher Jamie FettyWard. Ms. Fetty-Ward shared from a teacher's perspective how TSCG is meeting student needs at all levels. Ms. Fetty-Ward also shared how the professional development has helped teachers locate, notice, and cater to the students who need enrichment. With pre-assessment, TSCG allows teachers to give the students enrichment where they need it, when they need it.

Tom Ryerson, Director for Instructional Programming, shared that the district has five schools who will receive professional development in the fall of 2017. Also, on March 22, 2017, there will be a learning fair where teachers may learn and share from each other on enrichment and differentiation. Dr. Gentry will visit in January 2017 to meet with teachers.

DISTRICT REPORT CARD

Lanty McGuire, Superintendent, reported that school and district report cards are online for viewing. Mr. McGuire noted that the Moline-Coal Valley School District has a 92% graduation rate, which is higher than the State of Illinois average. He explained what other data is available and how to locate the information online.
