Augustana College's Abby Casey has gotten off to a quick start in her sophomore season, running all the way to a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Week selection recently.
Casey was the top small college runner at the Early Bird Invitational at Western Illinois University on Sept. 1. She clocked in at 15 minutes 11.4 seconds, trailing only Western Illinois’ Abigail Richter, who won with a time of 14:50, Hailey Tanchitella and Nicole Beebe. Tanchitella finished at 14:56.4, and Beebe took third at 14:57.
Casey’s fourth-place finish helped put the Vikings in third place overall with 50 points. Western Illinois won with 40 points and St. Ambrose was second with 43.
Augustana junior Michelle DeArmond placed in the top 10, finishing in sixth place at 15:24.1. Carol Garcia took 11th at 15:39.6, Mackenzie Renihan ended at 14th with 15:48.4, and Jill Humecke placed 15th at 15:49.5.
Expectations are high for Casey since her father, Chris, was a two-time national champion wrestler for Augustana in 1983 and 1984. Casey made the top-seven list in her freshman year, and also earned a varsity letter.
