Jared Ekberg of the Augustana College men’s swimming team started off December with a splash.
On Dec. 9, Ekberg recorded two individual wins at a dual meet against Carthage College. Ekberg took first place in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 48.41 seconds and 100-meter butterfly with a time of 52.95 seconds. He also finished in second place in the 100-meter breaststroke and swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay team, which finished in second place. His performance earned him College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin swimmer of the week honors.
This is the third time Ekberg has been named swimmer of the week during his collegiate career.
Despite the strong performance from Ekberg, the Vikings fell to Carthage 150.5-107.5. This was the first dual meet Augustana lost this year. Previously, the Vikings defeated St. Ambrose University, Knox College, Millikin University and Monmouth College. The men’s 200-meter medley relay team has been particularly strong this season, recording additional wins against Monmouth and Millikin. That team is made up of Ekberg, Brett Keefe, Bryan Haage and Jacob Speechley.
Throughout the year, Ekberg has been one of the best swimmers on the team. At the time of publishing, he has the team’s fastest time of the year in the 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter backstroke.
Greg Roskowic claimed second place in the 50-meter backstroke, and Miguel Rodriguez came in third, finishing 0.11 seconds behind Roskowic.
On the women’s side, Kristin Schoenecker took second-place in three events at the Carthage meet. She finished in second place in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 57.40 seconds. Augustana’s Morgan Brockhouse come in third place with a time of 58.79. Schoenecker also claimed second place in the 100-meter butterfly, with a time of 1:06.56.
Schoenecker and Brockhouse also swam on the 200-meter free relay, helping the team to a second-place finish with a time of 1:46.09.
In the 50-meter freestyle, Patti Grod claimed another second-place finish for Augustana with a time of 28.97 seconds, narrowly beating out Brockhouse, who finished 1/100th of a second behind Grod. Brockhouse took third place again in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:10.95.
Freshman swimmer Marissa Jaskae recorded a third-place finish in the 500-meter freestyle with a time of 5:56.53, while Rachel Heah took second place in the event, finishing in 5:54.98.
The women’s team also fell to Carthage at the dual meet, losing by a score of 181-65. The women were riding a hot streak in dual meets, having won the previous five.
That was the last meet of the calendar year, and the Vikings will be back in the pool Jan. 19, when the men’s and women’s teams take part in the Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa. The regular season will wrap up on Feb. 3 and CCIW Championships will get underway on Feb. 15 in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
