Bishop Hill Heritage Association recently issued the following announcement.
For this week’s look at the BHHA Collection, we have an 1873 Baseball Scorecard.
On August 16, 1873, John Root Jr., a 23 year old college student from Bishop Hill, attended a National Association baseball game in Chicago. Started in 1871, the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was the first professional baseball league in the United States.
This particular August game was between the Boston Red Stockings and the Philadelphia White Stockings, with Boston winning 11 to 8.
Mr. Root kept a scorecard of the game. He later mailed it, with a letter describing the game, to his friend Andrew Jacobson in Bishop Hill.
