Riverdale High School boys basketball coach Mark Lofgren has stepped down after leading the team to a 21-9 season, highlighted by a Three Rivers Conference West Division title.
Lofgren, a 2006 graduate of nearby Rockridge, cited wanting to spend more time with his family for his resignation. He took over as coach in 2014, rescuing a program that had gone 8-21 the year before.
Lofgren and his wife, Alina, are the parents of two young sons. He sat out the 2016-17 season after one of his sons was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma.
“My decision (to resign) was fairly recent,” Lofgren told the Dispatch-Argus. “But, I think during the basketball season, I certainly had the desire to be home more with my wife and my two boys.”
Lofgren said he still sees good things for the Riverdale team.
“I’m really excited with the things we did with the basketball program,” he said. “A lot of credit goes to the coaches, the kids and the district I work in. I’m proud of those accomplishments, but I’m excited to spend more time with my family.”
