Western Illinois University Riverfront Campus recently issued the following announcement.

Western Illinois University Professor Emeritus Steven M. Rock has been chosen to serve a six-year term on the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) Board of Trustees. Rock's term begins July 15.

Rock retired this month as a professor in WIU's Department of Economics and Decision Sciences. He had been a WIU professor since 1990 and served several years as chair of the Faculty Senate. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University.

In 2015, he was chosen to fill an elected active-member seat on the SURS Board, with that term expiring July 15.

Rock has served as secretary of the Faculty Advisory Council of Illinois Board of Higher Education and national vice president for finance for the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Rock has also been active at the chapter and local level of the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI). He has served on numerous education-related task forces, with several involving the Illinois Monetary Assistance Program.

The SURS Board of Trustees is made up of 11 trustees: five appointed by the governor including the chairperson who also serves as the chair of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, four active members elected by SURS active members and two annuitants elected by the annuitants of the System.
