Robert “Jay” Doherty is convinced he will feel right at home as Mercer County Clerk.

“With my deep Mercer County roots and positive attitude, I believe I will serve the citizens of this county well,” Doherty posted on Facebook when he announced his candidacy last year. “I'm excited about the opportunity to get to know more of you as I campaign over the next several months.”

Running as a Republican, Doherty is also confident that his background easily lends itself to such an endeavor.

Jay Doherty, candidate for Mercer County Clerk is a member of the Honor Marker Committee, a group that makes grave markers for veterans.

“I have many years of experience in management and organization, and my six years on the Aledo City Council has given me experience working with municipal budgets and elections,” he said.

Doherty has involved himself in the kinds of projects that matter most to him, which he also discussed on social media. In May, Doherty joined in preparing grave markers for veterans.

“The Honor Marker Committee had an assembly line going last night preparing another 150 veteran grave markers,” he wrote in another Facebook post. “We're now up to 627 total Mercer County Veterans that will have a grave marker that didn't before.”
