Moline Coal Valley Community Unit School District 40 students suspended 859 times in a single school year

Moline Coal Valley Community Unit School District 40 reported 859 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 859 students during the year. That equates to 11.9 percent of the 7,211 students enrolled.

Of the 439 in-school suspensions, 323 were given to boys and 116 were given to girls, including 322 elementary or middle schoolers and 117 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 259 incidents. There were 127 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 407 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 420 out-of-school suspensions, 325 were given to boys and 95 were given to girls, including 294 elementary or middle schoolers and 126 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence that caused physical injury. The category includes 206 incidents. There were 144 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 195 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
