WKEI AM 1450: Blame it on the polar vortex: Arctic air pushes Illinois into deep freeze

WKEI AM 1450 recently issued the following announcement.

Temperatures in Illinois are about plunge even lower in Illinois, and other parts of the Midwest could be among the coldest places on Earth this week – all thanks to the polar vortex.

“Basically, what’s called the polar vortex, or the main source of the arctic air that generally resides up near the Hudson Bay a lot of times in Canada, is coming right down across Illinois Wednesday,” said EJS Weather Meteorologist Eric Schmidt said Tuesday on the “RFD Today” radio program.

Thermometer readings could dip into the minus-20-degree range in parts of Illinois, and wind chills could hit as low as minus-55.

Some relief is right around the corner, though, as milder temperatures are expected for much of Illinois by the weekend.

“By Saturday and Sunday, highs are expected to be in the 40s. And in parts of southern Illinois, we’ll see highs in the 50s on Sunday,” Schmidt said. “It’s a quick shot of the arctic air, and that’s the good news.”

Looking beyond the weekend, Schmidt expects some of the state to be hit with rain early next week, “because temperatures will be warm enough.”

More arctic air is expected in the middle or end of next week but nothing to the extent of this week’s conditions.

“It doesn’t look to be as cold as Wednesday, but it still looks like another period of maybe below-normal temperatures for a few days,” Schmidt said. “And then going into the second week of February, it looks to be a little bit more on the active side, with a couple more systems coming through.”
