City of Kewanee City Council met March 9.

The City Council met in Council Chambers at 7:00 PM with the Mayor calling the meeting to order and the following answering to roll call:

Mayor Moore asked for a moment of silence for our troops still fighting overseas
Mayor Moore explained that the next items were placed on the consent agenda and were considered to be routine in nature to be passed as a whole with one vote of the Council. Mayor Moore requested that any member of the Council or the audience wishing to have an item removed from the consent agenda for individual consideration to make the request and the item would be removed and considered following the approval of the remaining consent items. The consent agenda included minutes from the February 24th , 2020 Council Meeting, payroll for the pay period ending February 29th 2020 in the amount of $216,289.86. The consent agenda items were approved on a motion made by Council Member Komnick and seconded by Council Member Faber. The motion passed 5 aye 0 nay.
Bills submitted for approval totaling $89,940.08 were approved on a motion made by Council Member Colomer and seconded by Council Member Yaklich. Council Member Colomer asked Scott Hinton in regards to a VFD at the WWTP. Scott explained this was a control that was repaired. Council Member Yaklich asked about the Supreme Radio bill for maintence. Rod Johnson stated it had been years that we had done a radio tune-up and was needed to fix the public works radios. Council Member Yaklich asked about a bill from Cummins. Kevin Newton stepped up and explained that a truck needed a part and only could be supplied by Cummins. Council Member Faber asked about a wheel adjustment and feels that maybe we could have adjusted it ourselves unless it was a part. Motion passed 5 ayes no Nays.
CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
• None
NEW BUSINESS
• Consideration of Ordinance #3998 directing the sale of the excess real estate located at 607 N. Tremont St. A motion made by Council Member Komnick and seconded by Council Member Faber. Council Member Yaklich asked what kind of piece of property this was? City Manager Gary Bradley stated that this was a piece of residential property. We have attempted to sell this land 2 years ago and now we have a potential buyer. This will be listed for 3 consecutive weeks and we will except bids with a minimum figure that can be determined at a later date. Motion passed with 5 ayes and 0 Nays.
• Consideration of an Ordinance #3999 directing the sale of the excess real estate located at 3rd and Main. Motion made by Council Member Faber and seconded by Council Member Komnick. Council Member Yaklich asked what kind of property? City Manger Gary Bradley stated this is a rarely used parking lot located by the old Spets. This will also be advertised.sealed bids and a minimum price. We are having it appraised currently. Motion passed with 5 ayes and 0 nays.
• Discussion of potential changes regarding Beekeeping within the City limits. City Manager Bradley stated that this is currently prohibited. We basically have 3 choices. Leave it alone, remove the whole section, and or make some changes that they feel are necessary. An example was submitted by Moline for a template that is reasonable. At this time Troop 4444 stepped up to give a small presentation and research on the effects of having Bees in everyday gardens and pollinating gardens. Bradley talked about some details on the types of bees and their patterns and where they tend to travel. Council Member Faber mentioned maybe a regulation for around parks and schools. Mayor Moore stated htat he actually knew of bee guy in our area that more be able to bring us some valid information to the board for guidance.
OTHER BUSINESS Council Communications
• First to go was Council Member Yaklich stated he attended the relay for Life and they held a trivia night and raised a good amount of money. It’s a good feeling living in a small town that is so supportive of local benefits.
• Council Member Faber wanted to remind people on Motorcycle awareness as the weather gets nicer.
• Council Member Colomer stated that being aware also is important for the kids riding their bikes now.
• Council Member Komnick Mentioned that pedestrians are pout more be cautious of them in the cross walks. Thank you to GS Troop 4444 for their hard work on gathering information. Thanks you to Gary Bradley for handeling a littering complaint. Also if you can spare the time to help with Junior Achievement please do so and it much appreciated.
• Mayor Moore wanted to thank the Kewanee Police Department on the self intiated calls and checking the businesses. We recently have checked on the Covid-19 please check the website where we have published some valid information. Congrats to Gage Binky on his finish in the State Swim Meet Finals Meet and the athlete of the week in the Star Courrier. My Condolences to Marie McKinnis family in her recent passing. Conragts to our very own Fire Department on their recent rateing they received. Finally please respond to the Census. Its vitally important to get the accurate numbers for our city.

• There being no further business, Council Member Colomer moved to adjourn the meeting and Council Member Komnick seconded the motion. Roll call showed 5 ayes, no nays. The meeting adjourned at 7:35.26 PM.
