Many Illinois shoppers view Pritzker's face mask decree as a suggestion instead of a mandate

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s order requiring shoppers to wear a mask when patronizing Illinois businesses is raising plenty of eyebrows based on the many reactions it’s generating.

"It goes with me everywhere," Nancy Ward,” told WQAD of her mask while shopping at Anchor Lumber in Silvis. "You can't get in anywhere without them now."

Waylin Uzelac said he is taking a much more measured approach to determining what the governor’s declaration should mean.

"I looked to see if other people had it," he said of how he handles things. "Some people did, some people didn't, so I didn't put it on."

The face mask decree was part of the governor’s extended stay-at-home order that ran through May, but the governor has extended his face mask order indefinitely. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took the position that everyone over the age of 2 should wear a face covering whenever social distancing isn’t an option in a public setting.

Uzelac agrees.

"I guess I'm prepared," he said of always having his mask at the ready. "Whether I use it or not, that's the question."

As of May 31, Illinois reported 120,600 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 5,390 deaths. Rock Island County has 658 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
