Sen. Win Stoller (R-Germantown Hills) opted to turn down his state pension, citing the state's pension budget crisis.
According to his Facebook post, the first-term senator refused his state pension saying that, "It is tough to be a reformer of a broken system if you have a financial stake in it, which is why I turned down my state pension benefits."
According to the Peoria Journal Star, Stoller said he’s trying to fix the pension crisis that is engulfing the state of Illinois.
Stoller cited a report by bond credit rating agency Moody’s that said Illinois’ pension debt has ballooned to $317 billion, which is more than any other state in the nation.
Stoller said it didn’t feel right for him to get his state pension when Illinois is having a huge financial problem. He said, “I do not want to be part of the problem. Instead, I want to be a part of the solution.”
