Illinois State Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) is sharing her love of reading by inviting local students to participate in her sixth annual Summer Reading Club event.

The "Reading BUZZ" program is for elementary-aged students who attend school in the 71st District, a Monday release from McCombie's office said. It challenges youths to read at least eight books by Aug. 12, 2022. The program is designed to promote positive reading habits for young students.

"I have always been an avid reader and as you can imagine, goal driven!" McCombie told Rock Island Today on Monday. "I want kids to join our reading challenge and hopefully make memories they share later in their lives. Reading was a passion of my Grandma Reagans' and we shared a lot of time together reading. This program could be a time for families to unplug, enjoy the quiet and each other's company."

Participants who complete the challenge will receive a special treat along with a certificate from the Illinois House of Representatives.

In order for students to participate in the program, an application form must be submitted to McCombie's office by Aug. 12.

Parents and students can fill out an application online here. A printable form for mailing can be found here.
