Develop a disaster plan: Be prepared when disaster strikes

Floods, fire, tornadoes, and storms can put lives at risk, damage property, and shut down power. Building a household emergency plan is an important step to help individuals and families safely cope during emergencies, but knowing where to start can be overwhelming and time-consuming.

Learn ways to feel in control and stay safe when the unexpected happens in a five-part online series from University of Illinois Extension. Sessions in the Be Prepared When Disaster Strikes series equip individuals with information they need to build an emergency kit and plan for safely navigating emergency situations during and after a disaster.

Participation is free, and registration is required. Register for any or all sessions at: go.illinois.edu/BePrepared. All sessions begin at noon.

  • August 1: Emergency Kits and Communication Plans
  • August 8: Building an Emergency Food and Water Supply
  • August 15: Impact of Hunger and Health in Disasters
  • August 22: Tree Management Before and After a Disaster
  • August 29: Financial Emergency Preparedness
If a reasonable accommodation is needed to participate,  contact Kristin Bogdonas at mkmbogdo@illinois.edu. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet access needs.
