WIU Counseling Center to Offer Mental Health First Aid Training Course
According to the American College Health Association, in Spring 2017, nearly 40% of college students said they felt depressed in the prior year and it was difficult for them to function. The Western Illinois University Counseling Center will host Bridgeway to offer faculty, staff and graduate students a Mental Health First Aid training course from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in Horrabin Hall 1.
"Mental Health First Aid is a valuable training for faculty and staff directly working with students who may be struggling with mental health concerns," said University Counseling Center Director Cara Cerullo. "It will help individuals feel more prepared in supporting a student in need."
The training course is designed to teach participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorder. Participants will learn how to respond to the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE), covering campus culture, stress and risk factors, and applying ALGEE to different scenarios and reviewing mental health resources available on campus and within the community.
Lunch will be provided to all participants. Pre-registration by Wednesday, Jan. 4 is required for the event.
