Baseball upends Dominican for 11th straight win
Augustana baseball routed Dominican in a non-conference game on Sunday, defeating the Stars 16-2 to secure their 11th straight victory.
In his fifth start of the year, Harrison Boushele swiftly got the Augie offense to the plate with a three-up, three-down first inning. The Vikings struck immediately, scoring runs on a Matt Ozanic sacrifice fly and a Dymitri Kanellakis RBI triple. Boushele struck out two batters in the second inning before the Augie bats surged for four additional runs. Cole Green blasted a two-run double with the bases loaded ahead of Alex Simon and Kyle Campbell, who brought in the final two runs via a single and sacrifice fly.Two runs quickly followed a Dominican score in the top of the third in response from Augustana. Green hit a sacrifice fly prior to Simon's second RBI of the game one at-bat later. The Vikings added four runs in the fourth to stretch their lead to double figures after an error from Dominican brought in the first run before Green broke things open with a three-run single. Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Vikings added their final four runs in the bottom of the sixth, seeing two-run hits from both Simon and Michael Gattuso. The Stars added a run in the top of the seventh, but could not overcome the towering deficit. Boushele earned his fifth win of the season after striking out eight batters in five innings of action. As a team, Augie collected 15 hits, led by a 4-4 effort from Kanellakis. Green was the team leader with six runs batted in.The Vikings will take a five-day break before traveling to Florida for the RussMatt Invitational from March 24-29. Their first game is against Union (N.Y.) at Lake Myrtle Park at 11:00 a.m. CDT on Friday.
