Chrislyn Carr said being new at Rock Island High School has gone quite well, but said “it was a big change.”
What shouldn't be a big change for her this year is continued excellence on the basketball court.
Carr, a 5-foot-5 junior guard, brings an All-State resume from Davenport West to the Lady Rocks program this season. There, she will join another great player, Breanna Beal, to form the foundation of a promising season.
In her freshman season at Davenport West, Carr wasted no time in establishing herself.
According to QuikStatsIowa.com, Carr was seventh in Iowa, with a 22.6-points-per-game average. She shot 40 percent overall from the field, including 37.7 percent on 3-pointers. Her other per-game averages included 3.1 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.5 assists. Those efforts resulted in her being named to the Iowa 5A All-State Third Team, according to ESPN.com.
Last season, Carr was fourth in Iowa in scoring average, at 23.5 points per contest, improving her shooting averages to 45.1 percent on all field-goal attempts and 38.8 percent on 3-pointers. She also made 81.2 percent of her free-throw attempts. Carr improved her other statistics to 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 steals and 3.1 assists a game. She also moved up to the All-State Second Team.
Then came the change that brought her home.
“My dad (Chris Carr) stopped coaching at Davenport West, so I decided to go to my home school, and that's why I'm at Rocky,” she said.
Carr brings with her not only great stats and state accolades, but also national recognition. ESPN.com has her rated as a three-star recruit out of five stars and ranked 18th among point guards for the Class of 2018. The player evaluation on her ESPN.com page describes her as a “jet-quick floor leader with a scorer's mentality.”
Carr has no schools she is considering listed on the page.
“Right now, I'm just open-minded to any colleges,” she said. “What I'm looking for in a college is a good academic program and more of an up-tempo style.”
Carr's solid ranking as a recruit will join Beal, who has been featured on ESPNW. Beal, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, is a five-star recruit, rated No. 4 overall in the Class of 2019.
This will be the first season Carr will not be coached by her father, and she is getting used to the new environment. However, the prospect of playing with Beal and others on the Lady Rocks is something Carr said she is looking forward to, as she played on a children's team years ago with Beal and fellow Lady Rock Mariah Anderson.
Carr said that while she has improved her shooting and passing, she would like to improve her defense. She also wants “to develop team chemistry and make everyone around me better, as well as them making me a better player.”
“The goal for the team is to win the state title,” Carr said.
"Chrislyn does things that aren't coachable," Rock Island Head Coach Thad Hoover told Rock Island Today. "She has the ability to create offense with running an offense. On top of her great ability, she is a tremendous person and a hard worker."
