The city of Rock Island and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Office of Water Resources (IDNR/OWR) are partnering with the Illinois State Water Survey, Rock Island District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Rock Island to assess the risk of flood in the Mississippi River watershed.
Starting in mid-January, the IDNR/OWR survey crew will initiate its flood risk assessment. This work should continue through the spring.
Surveyors will often need to enter individual properties to collect relevant elevation information; they will seek elevation of the first floor and lowest point of entry. In turn, this will help them determine potential flood threats to homes or businesses that could be affected if the Mississippi River floods.
